Watkins, Johnson win Super Eagle Day 5K

For the second year in a row, Clint Watkins and Andi Johnson were the overall winners in the Super Eagle Day 5K on March 12. Watkins made the trip to Millen from Madison, Georgia to claim his second Super Eagle Day 5K Championship trophy. Watkins covered the 3.1 mile course in 17:42.

Andi Johnson won her second Super Eagle 5K trophy in a time of 24:48. Andi lives in Sylvania and she is a member of the Millen Milers Running/Walking Club.

For the second year in a row, Millen's David Williams challenged Watkins during the early stages of the 5K race. Watkins surged past the 2-mile mark in just over eleven minutes and coasted to a 2 minute victory over Williams.

In the female division, Andi defeated former Millen resident Erin Green for the 1st place trophy. Erin was the second female overall and finished less than a minute behind Andi in a time of 25:43.

A number of area residents picked up age group awards in the 5K Road Race. Tyler Taylor won the 10 & under age group, Will Brinson and Remigio Gomez finished 1st and 2nd in the 11 - 14 male division, while Katlyn Head and Julie Drake finished 1st and 2nd in the female division.

In the male 15 - 19 age group the order of finish was David Williams, Vincent Bynes, John Douglas, Geoffrey Daniel and Tony Williams.

In the female 15 - 19 age group Brookes Brinson and Brittany Dykes finished 1st and 2nd.

In the 25 - 29 age groups, Erin Green was the first female and Aaron Burton was the first male. First and second place in the 30 - 34 male age group went to Brad Alexander and Wesley Parker, in the female division first place went to Rachel Key. Roger Clarke and Steve Summers finished 1st and 2nd in the 35 - 39 age group for the men, in the ladies division it was Theresa Proctor finishing 1st followed by Sherry Gulley and Patricia Dykes.

In the 40 - 44 age group, Tamia Lovett was the first female and Herbert Middleton was the first male. Toby Davis and Micah Ward finished 1st and 2nd in the 45 - 49 male division and Pamela Bryant was the first female in that age group.

Pam Dwight and Gwen Russell finished 1st and 2nd in the 50 - 54 age group and Rick Umpleby was the first male in the 50 - 54 age group.

The first place lady in the 55 - 59 age group was Rosella Proffitt and Tom Blalock was first in the male division of the 65 & over age group.

In the 1 Mile Fun Run, Andy Cunningham finished the course in just over six minutes to capture the 1st Place Trophy. Andy led a group of 56 runners and walkers who participated in the 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk.

Flakes, Debbie Fountain, Tricia Frye, Jessica Head, Nancy Head, Robert Highsmith, Judy Holton, Heather Johnson, Lashonna Kelsey, Foye Knight, Jake Knight, Cindy Liner, Seth Linder, Raphael Lovett, Rhonda Lovett, Grace McLamb, Kristin McLamb, Marty Miller, Penny Motto, Yvonne Motto, Shenita Mozee, Gena Patterson, Tamaria Patterson, Quinton Patterson, Ethan Proctor, Chiquita Reese, Caige Ridings, Paul Salter, Vashti Sheppard, Christopher Simmons, Jeremy Stripling, Teanna Taylor, Taylor Thomas, Jocqueil Watson, Debbie Williams and Mikesha Williams.

The race would not have been possible without the cooperation of the Millen Police Department, the Jenkins County Sheriff's Department and the Jenkins County EMT staff. The Super Eagle Day Committee would like to thank Matthew Williams, Tracy Herrington, James Bedgood, David Pollett, Billy Alligood and Cliff Richards.

The Community Health Fair featured representatives from the Jenkins County Hospital and the Jenkins County Health Department. On hand were Pam Drake, Donna Hendley, Donna Saxon, Alvin Burke, Julie Bird, Donna Burke and Sandra Harley.

Edna Davis from East Central Health District 6 and Katy Yurman from UGA Department of Foods and Nutrition also helped make the health a success.

Post race snacks were supplied by Debra Herrmann from the Jenkins County School Food Services and Christine Stripling and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

The Child ID Project was coordinated by Randy Hill and a group from Planters EMC.

Over 50 reading books were passed out to children age 12 and under. The books were provided by the Jenkins County Family Enrichment Commission and Ms. Pam Dwight.
