RAMBLIN' WITH RAY

GREAT HANDS.......GREAT LEGS!!!!!

6/12/06

I was going through an old folder today and found a letter to the editor of The Savannah Morning News from 1992. Here is copy of the letter. I wanted to thank the Savannah Striders for a great race, but I guess I wanted to brag just a bit. Read on and you'll see what I mean!

Editor: I'd like to make a couple of comments about the recent Savannah Marathon.

First, I think it was a great idea to move the marathon into the city of Savannah. To move a large number of people 26miles through a city the size of Savannah takes the cooperation of many people.

There were hundreds of volunteers and civilian and law enforcement officers on the streets and they all did a great job. I certainly hope the Savannah Striders and the City of Savannah make the marathon, run entirely within the city, an annual event.

I'd like to comment on one young lady who really helped make my day. I'd just passed the 22-mile mark and was approaching a water table manned by a group of high school or perhaps junior high students.

I remember most of the young people had on the same kind of tee shirt; it could have been a Y-club shirt.

As you can imagine, trying to take a cup of water while running can be a tricky maneuver. I was really watching the cups as I drew closer to the table.

I picked out two cups held by a young lady and went for them. We made the exchange flawlessly. With two cups of water safely in my possession, I shouted over my shoulder, "Great hands!" Much to my surprise, I heard her yell back, "Great legs!"

With those words ringing in my ears, I sailed through the last four miles and recorded my best marathon time since 1982.

I'd like to thank the City of Savannah, the Savannah Striders, law enforcement volunteers, and especially the young lady with the "great hands" for making the marathon a success and a pleasure for all the runners.

I hope to see you again in 1993.

See Ya,
