Ray Miller was the first coach. The only meet the Eagles attended in 1979 was the Region 4-AA Meet in Lexington, Georgia. The team finished 4th in the field of 7 teams. Eddie Wells was the top finisher for Jenkins County. Eddie placed 4th overall with a time of 19:38. Eddie's 4th place finish earned him a spot in the State Cross Country Meet and made him the first runner in our school's history to compete in the state meet. Here are the members of that first team and their finishing position: 4th, Eddie Wells; 9th, Calvin McCloud; 12th, Ned Bradford; 14th, Troy Gay; 15th, Vic Kovac; 16th, Mark Boone; and 17th, Troy Oliver.
1980 - THE FIRST GIRLS TEAMIn 1980 Jenkins County fielded the first girls cross country team. Kim Bragg became the first girl in the school's history to compete in the State Cross Country Meet. Her time for the 2 mile course at the Atlanta Waterworks Course was 16:43. Kim finished 5th overall in the Region 4-AA Meet and helped the girls to a 3rd place finish. The other girls on that first team were: Kim Boone, Kathy Boone, Beth Grooms, Allison Newbern and Denise Williams. The boys' team also finished 3rd in the Region Meet. Eddie Wells and Rob Sharkey were the top two finishers for the Eagles. They were followed by Othello Watkins, Kelvin McClain, Dexter Rhodes, Troy Gay and Mark Boone. 1982 - THE FIRST HOME MEET AT MAGNOLIA SPRINGSThe first home cross country meet was held at Magnolia Springs on Oct. 21, 1982. It was a duel meet against Bryan County. The boys swept the first 7 places to outscore Bryan County 15-50. The order of finish for the boys was: 1st, Don Strong - 16:36; 2nd, George Sea, 16:37; 3rd, Jimmy Holmes; 4th, Calvin Strong; 5th, Rob Sharkey; 6th, Windell Torrence; 7th, Nemox Gordon. The girls lost a close contest to Bryan Co. 25 - 31. For the Lady Eagles Frankie Williams finished 2nd, Barbara Fryson was 4th, Angela Kelly finished 6th, Felicia Burroughs was 8th and Kim Bragg finished 11th.In the 1982 Region Meet the boys finished 2nd behind SCD and qualified for the State CC Meet. In the Region Meet the order of finish was: 3rd, Jimmy Holmes - 16:39; 6th, Don Strong, 9th, Calvin Strong; 17th, Rob Sharkey; 19th, Windell Torrence; 20th, George Sea; 21st, Nemox Gordon. In the 1982 State CC Meet the Eagles finished 8th. The order of finish was: 19th, Jimmy Holmes - 18:43; 40th, Calvin Strong; 41st, Othello Watson; 52nd, Don Strong; 56th, Rob Sharkey; 71st, George Sea; 77th, Nemox Gordon. 1983 - THE FIRST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP: BEST FINISH IN STATE MEET, 4thThe first Boys' Region Championship came in 1983. The Eagles finished 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 for a team total 19 points. Bryan Co. finished 2nd with 90 points. The other teams were: Savannah Country Day, 91; Glennville, 94; Johnson Co., 97; and SEB, 116. Jimmy Holmes and Calvin Strong finished first and second, their times were 16:28 and 16:29 respectively. George Sea, 4th; Ernest Foreman, 5th; Windell Torrence, 7th; Rob Sharkey, 14th; and Hank Yarbrough finished 15th.With Jimmy Holmes leading the way, the Eagles finished 4th at the State Cross Country Meet in 1983. 1984 - SECOND REGION CHAMPSIONSHIP: 5TH IN STATEThe Eagles won their second consecutive region championship in Savannah. The Eagles had five finishers in the first seven runners for a total of 21 points. Bryan Co. was second with 56 points, followed by Johnson County's 72 and Metter's 130 points. Calvin Strong (17:43) finished first. Calvin was followed by Anthony Sherrod (2nd), Darrell Williams (5th), Solomon Scott (6th), Lyndon Snelling (7th), Brain Daughtry (13th) and Edward Sessions (14th). The team finished 5th at the State Cross Country Meet held in Marietta. Calvin Strong's 9th place (17:46) paced the Eagles. The other finishers were: Jimmy Holmes (14th), Darrell Williams (24th), Anthony Sherrod (31th), Solomon Scott (39th), Brian Daughtry (40th), Edward Sessions (50th). 1985 - THIRD REGION CHAMPIONSHIP: WESLEY WRIGHT 3RD IN STATEThe Eagles won their third consecutive region championship in Savannah. The Eagles placed five runners in the top ten for a total of 32 points. They were followed by: Metter (56), Bryan Co. (58), SCD (97), and Johnson Co. (113). Wesley Wright won the race in 18:06. He was followed by: Keith Sapp (5), 19:31; Darrrell Williams (7), Shane Harris (9), Alvin Lassiter (10), Brian Daughtry (18) and James Reddick (19). The the State Cross Country Meet, Wesley Wright became the highest finisher in the school's history by touring the 5K course in 17:32. He was followed by: Keith Sapp (24th) in 18:57, Darrell Williams (30th), Alvin Lassiter (48th), Shane Harris (55th), James Reddick (58th), and Brian Daughtry (64th).1986 - GIRLS WIN FIRST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP; BOYS MAKE IT FOUR IN A ROWThe girls won their first ever Region Cross Country Championship and the boys won their fourth consecutive Region Championship in Bryan County. The Eagles edged Metter by 3 points, 43 to 46. The other schools were SEB (77), Bryan Co. (87) and Johnson County with only four runners. Keith Sapp won the race in 18:54 followed by Randy Morris (2nd) in 19:01. Michael McClain (10th), Robert Evans (13th), Charles Anfield (17th), Brian Daughtry (20th) and Dexter Wright (21st) competed for Jenkins County. For the Girls, Teresa Evans finished 2nd overall. She was followed by Katherine Kelly, Jacqulon Jenkins, Michelle Jackson and Jewuverne Jenkins. In the state meet, the boys finished 9th. Keith Sapp (18:44) finished 33rd. He was followed by: Randy Morris (55th), Michael McClain (60th), Brian Daughtry (63rd), Robert Evans (72nd), Dexter Wright (76th), and Charles Anfield (90th). Two girls competed in the state meet. Katherine Kelly (40th) and Jacqulon Jenkins (48th).1987 - BOY'S CHAMPIONSHIP STREAK ENDSThe Eagles' four year strangle hold on the region ended in 1987. The boys' team finished second behind Metter in the region meet held at Magnolia Springs. On the bright side, Keith Sapp continued the streak of having a Jenkins County runner finish first in the region meet. Keith won the race in a time of 17:17. The other members were: Michael McClain (9th), Ricky Perryman (11th), Ricky Mobley (12), Marco Johnson (14th) and Johnathon Williams (20th). The girls finished 3rd in the region that year. Katherine Kelly finished 4th overall. She was followed by Jacqulon Jenkins, Tammie Wright, Tracey Mosley and Lisa Newton. 1988 - COACH BOBBY JAMES RUNS FOR JENKINS COUNTYThe 1988 Region Cross Country Championship was held on a muddy dirt road in Wrens. Current Cross Country Coach Bobby James competed for the Eagles that year. Coach James finished the demanding 3.2 mile course in 25:30, good enough for 33rd place. For the Eagles Charles Anfield finished 20th overall in a time of 23:06. Charles was followed by: Jake Wright in 24:33 (29th), Coach Bobby James in 25:30 (33rd) and David Reese 26:40 (37th). A team must have five runners to compete for the team region championship and Jenkins County only had four finishers in 1988.
2006 - FIRST REGION CHAMPIONSHIP IN SINCE 1987Under the direction of Head Coach Bobby James and Assistant Coach Jimmy Brannen, the Jenkins County boys won the 2006 Region 2-A Cross Country Championship. This was the first region title for the Eagles since 1987. In one of the most exciting finishes in recent years, the Eagles edged Calvary by two points and Savannah Country Day by five points. For the Eagles Brandon Wade led the way with a 7th place finish in 19:09. Brandon was followed by James Bramblett, 8th, 19:21; Jamar Holmes, 9th, 19:22; Martivious Morris, 10th, 19:23; Justin Myers, 13th, 19:42; Vincent Bynes, 19th, 20:06; and Coley Clifton, 29th, 21:56. The team scores were: Jenkins County, 47; Calvary - 49; Savannah Country Day - 52; Bryan County - 86; Claxton - 111; Portal - 182. In the state meet, the boys finished 17th.
