Ray has worked for the Jenkins County School System for 29 years. Ray's background is teaching physical education and coaching. Ray was on the track team in high school. His 440 yard relay team finished 4th in the Class "C" State Track Meet in 1965, in Macon. CAN YOU PICTURE RAY AS A SPRINTER?????? He started running as a hobby on January 31, 1977. Since that time he has competed in over 220 races including 10 marathons and 6 triathlons.
I'll bet you didn't know that:
1. Ray's very first race was the Savannah Marathon - not a 5K or a 10K but a marathon!
2. Ray once had a running "streak" of over 12 years. Back problems in 1992 but a stop to that streak
3. He has a 5K PR of 19:03 and a marathon PR of 3:31:05 (Many years ago)
4. Ray, along with Jim Hite, Randy Brannen and Tim Rountree ran in the first Savannah River Bridge Run way back in 1991
6. Ray helped get Joyce Hodges-Hite start her running career
7. Coached MMM President Rob Sharkey in cross country and track at JCHS.
8. Finished the Steve Lynn Triathlon in Savannah which consisted of a 55.5 mile bike ride, 1.3 mile swim and a 13.1 mile run. ONCE WAS ENOUGH!
9.Still enjoys running those 5K's in 30 minutes and running in great company like Eddie, Jim, Joyce, Rob and Kenny.>
Ray, and wife Pat, have two daughters. Michelle Miller who lives in St.Simons Island, and Dee Dee Miller-Goodwin. Dee Dee and her husband Matt live in Cincinnati.
